eLearning and the use of Virtual Games in teaching Philosophy and Religious Studies

Description

The Masterclass will discuss some key definitions and forms of eLearning and show how these are applied in various settings (primarily at the University and Higher Education Level). It will also discuss key challenges and problems (esp. during COVID restrictions). The use of Virtual Games in eLearning will be discussed as a potential solution to issues of retention, deeper and metacognitive learning, as well as meeting challenges in relation to student abilities and skills. Participants will receive papers and other material to read before the Masterclass. They will also receive the 5 Workshop questions. As more and more of our communication is based on the use of eLearning to teach (esp. in times of COVID restrictions) the Masterclass will be useful to academic teachers working in the Humanities.

Form

Presentation and discussion (50 min+ 10 min discussion); Workshop discussion of 5 questions which will enable participants to go deeper into the relevant issues: 60 min. All discussions will be in English, with short summaries of discussions in Greek (if required and if Greek participants are present).

Coordinator

Dr Constantinos Athanasopoulos (PhD in Philosophy, Glasgow) is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Champion for Philosophical and Religious Studies (HEA). He has worked as an eLearning Project Officer at the Subject Centre for Philosophical and Religious Studies, advising academics in Departments of Philosophy and Religious Studies through out the UK. He is accredited from SEDA on Support for Learning. He has a wide experience in running eLearning programmes in Philosophy and Religious Studies at various levels (primarily at University undergraduate settings). From 2005 he works at the Open University teaching primarily Philosophy and Religious Studies courses.
